How I Would Start Again With 0 Clients
Hint: I wouldn't send 1,000 cold DMs asking for work.
Yo it’s Kyle
I have a pretty large network of creators that I can contact now, so finding work isn’t a problem.
But back in 2021, I had no one.
Here’s what I’d do if I was thrown back into that situation today…
Zero friends in the industry
Zero funds in my account
Zero video editing clients
I’d spend 30 days reaching out to everyone I f*ck with on social media.
Follow count doesn’t matter, just DM anyone who you enjoy seeing on your feed. And do it everywhere.
Twitter (X), TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube comment sections etc. You’ll be blown away by how many connections you can build this way.
But DMs alone won’t help you. Especially if you’re sending the same DM to everyone. Be original, actually strike up a conversation with them - don’t just send formatted cold DMs like everyone else.
I’d also level up my video editing skills DAILY to make sure I’m improving constantly as this will obviously make finding clients much easier.
After the first 30 days, you should have a handful of people you talk to regularly, maybe you’ve gotten their number and hopped on a couple video calls!
Great, the next stage I’d focus on is securing work with ONE of those new connections.
Don’t worry about getting 20+ clients and scaling so fast you can retire your parents immediately,
the beauty of this method is that it only takes one person, the rest of your work will now come from the reputation built with this client.
GREAT video editors are in such high demand that your new client will most likely tell their friends about you, and they’ll want to know if you can work with them too (again, if you’re good at editing)
This is where the snowball effect begins.
The DMs may be slow, but you now have credibility. An unfair advantage not available to you in the beginning.
These DMs will only get more common as you take on new clients and improve as an editor.
And what’s amazing about this is that the more clients you take on, the better you become at editing, communication, dealing with revisions etc and the more you can charge for your expertise.
The more expertise you have, the more people want to work with you.
This is the exact method I used to scale my agency to $10,000/month and land work with clients like @lucapeterson, @sebastienjefferies and @tomnoske.
Appreciate you reading ’til the end
Hope this helps you on your freelancing journey, see you in the next one!
